Position Summary:
Supply Chain Leader is responsible for the strategic planning and task execution for procurement, acquisition, and distribution of raw materials and outside services. The role is also responsible for designing systems to support multi-site operational capacities and inventory levels to support growth, lead-time, and other competitive strategies. The Supply Chain Leader is expected to participate and lead improvement activities that will increase the velocity of the supply chain and profitability of the company. These activities can include contract negotiations, stocking strategies, supplier diversification, supplier partnerships, continuous improvement projects, ensuring company access to supplier capacities in all market cycles. The Supply Chain Leader develops new and strengthens existing strategic relationships with suppliers, monitors market trends (including costs, and serves as a resource to senior management in matters relating to contracts and procurement.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Architect and execute a supply chain model that optimizes production capabilities, protects company's markets/customers, and creates value through access to raw materials, outside services capacities during all market cycles while maintaining market leading quality and market competitive pricing.
• Create and maintain strategic partnerships with suppliers, distributors, and customers, creating communication channels for critical market collaborations and operational improvements.
• Define and issue contracts in support of operational/scheduling efficiencies while ensuring timely product availability in high market demand cycles. Coordinate recovery and growth plans through supply chain as required.
• Negotiate supplier agreements/contracts, payment terms, obtain best pricing and monitor quality of purchased materials, purchased services and supplier performance. Total annual spend $100M – $300M.
• Lead improvements to business systems resulting in the value enhancement of inventory investments and operational versatility. Coordinates with Sales, Inventory Control, Production Control and Operations for input and sustainment. Maintain planning and costing parameters for raw materials and outside services.
• Monitor commodity market pricing and market developments within metal producing and metal removal suppliers. Translate market knowledge into actionable plans.
• Manage the scrap material resale process including scrap dealer relationships.
• Strategically identify and develop new supply sources (domestic and international), ensuring technical capability, quality and product standards are achieved.
• Conduct supplier reviews and layout recovery plans when required. Provide timely information to Sales, Production Control and Operations on purchase order status and customer inquiries.
• Support the development of layered delivery schedules in conjunction with sales and production control for long-term manufacturing projects.
• Establish and maintain performance metrics for the effectiveness of suppliers, and the overall supply chain
• Monitor and enhance inventory strategies, optimizing the balance between cash flow, supplier relationships, and inventory availability.
• Provide technical support to internal resources with regard to raw material supplier’s capabilities, supply chain quality levels and general industry trends.
• Educate and training of fellow employee owners in procurement and supply chain methodologies and tools. Create standard work instructions for new employee onboarding or employee backups.
• Travel to and conduct onsite vendor visits to educate and verify vendor capabilities & processes to be aligned with company specifications and Quality Management Systems.
Qualifications:
• BA/BS degree in Operations/Business/Supply Chain Management or a technical discipline
• 7-10 years progressive experience in Purchasing & Sourcing within a manufacturing organization
• 2-4 years most recent experience in the Metals Industry
• Moderate knowledge of the steel making process, metallurgy, forging, heat-treating, machining, NDE, metrology processes.
• Experience in a multi-plant manufacturing environment with steel purchasing.
• ISM (C.P.M., CPSM) and/or APICS (CPIM, CIRM, CSCP) certification preferred
• Strong fundamental business understanding of the metals industry and application of topics such as:
resources, assets, balance sheets, cash flow, fixed assets, margin, return on investment and impact of decisions relating to these topics and the effects on the business.
• Knowledge regarding ERP / MRP functions with JD Edwards experience preferred
• Demonstrated continuous improvement skillset with experience in team-based improvement activities that deliver profitability and velocity improvements.
• Project management skills to develop work agreements, project scopes, specifications, schedules, timelines, and definition of deliverables.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate a wide variety of issues to Operations, Sales, Customers, and Suppliers.
• Proficient in MS Office.
• Ability to work safely in a heavy manufacturing environment
