Shop Manager – Job Description
Location: Warren, MI 48089Compensation: Up to $130,000 + standard benefitsHours: 6:30 AM – 4:30 PM, every other Saturday (flexible once established)
Our customer is a financially sound, family-owned company with over 20 years in the transportation and repair business. They operate independently with their own cost center and facility. Their fleet includes over 100 OTR trucks, 160 power units (primarily Volvos), and more than 1,300 Stoughton trailers. They pride ourselves on quality, in-house repairs—from engine rebuilds to trailer chassis and bodywork.
Position Overview
Our customer is in need of an experienced Shop Manager to lead a large-scale tractor/trailer maintenance and repair facility. This is a hands-on leadership role that involves managing daily operations, supervising a team of 30+ technicians, and ensuring the highest standards in safety, service, and productivity. You'll report directly to the General Manager and collaborate with ownership and operations leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day operations for planned and unplanned repairs on Volvos, Freightliners, and Stoughton 53' trailers.
- Manage shop P&L, warranty reimbursements, and a $1M+ parts inventory.
- Provide leadership to a team of 32 technicians, including trailer specialists and road service techs.
- Oversee training, certification, and process improvements for warranty work.
- Implement best-in-class safety protocols (DOT, EPA, OSHA, ICC standards).
- Collaborate with the Safety Department on regular inspections and corrective actions.
- Support accurate parts ordering and inventory control (Fullbay experience highly preferred).
- Participate in strategic planning to improve efficiency and reduce return repairs.
Qualifications
- Proven experience managing a high-volume tractor/trailer or truck repair facility.
- Supervisory experience over 14+ direct reports.
- Strong background in diesel tractor and trailer maintenance.
- Working knowledge of Fullbay and Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- ASE certifications strongly preferred.
- Skilled in coaching, staffing, and leading technical teams across multiple shifts.
- Ability to multi-task and make sound decisions in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to adapt work hours and occasional Saturdays during ramp-up period.
