A Registered Nurse (RN) Supervisor for the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) population provides clinical and administrative leadership to nursing and direct care staff. This role requires balancing hands-on clinical oversight, staff development, and quality assurance to ensure the highest standard of care for individuals with IDD in residential, community, or clinical settings.

Job summary
The RN Supervisor provides clinical oversight and supervision to nursing and direct care staff serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The supervisor ensures quality medical care, regulatory compliance, and a person-centered approach that promotes the health, safety, and well-being of all clients.
 
Key responsibilities
 
Clinical oversight
  • Provide clinical leadership for all medical care within assigned programs, such as residential group homes.
  • Review and approve medication schedules, treatment orders, and individual support plans (ISPs).
  • Serve as a medical resource for staff, patients, families, and healthcare providers, addressing complex health issues and emergencies.
  • Conduct regular health assessments and monitor the medical status of individuals, ensuring all health concerns are addressed promptly.
  • Educate and counsel individuals and their caregivers on health management, wellness, and safety.
  • Coordinate with external healthcare professionals, including physicians and specialists, to ensure integrated and comprehensive care.
 
Supervision and training
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the performance of nursing and direct support staff.
  • Create and organize clinical training programs and orientation schedules for new nursing staff.
  • Develop and implement nursing policies and procedures that align with organizational standards and best practices.
  • Foster a collaborative, positive, and supportive work environment for the care team.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, address employee complaints, and assist with disciplinary action as needed.
 
Regulatory compliance and quality assurance
  • Monitor daily operations to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local healthcare regulations, including HIPAA.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and inspections conducted by governing agencies.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential medical records, documentation, and reporting.
  • Implement and participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of care services.
  • Provide support during incident and crisis situations, ensuring appropriate action is taken and documented.
 
Qualifications
 
Education and licensure
  • Required: Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.
  • Preferred: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN).
 
Experience
  • Minimum of 2–5 years of experience as an RN.
  • Prior experience in a supervisory or leadership role within a nursing or clinical setting is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working directly with the IDD or behavioral health population is preferred or required, depending on the role.
  • Background in community residential, long-term care, or chronic care facilities is often a plus.
 
Skills and abilities
  • Strong leadership, clinical assessment, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to train and develop clinical and direct care staff.
  • Effective problem-solving, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and basic computer applications.
  • Patience, tact, and compassion for working with a vulnerable population.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record may be required.
