We are recruiting on purpose a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician – Entry to Senior Level.
 

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking motivated professionals to join our Construction Materials Testing (CMT) team, with opportunities ranging from Laboratory Technician (entry-level) to Senior Inspector / Senior Engineering Technician. These positions support both field and laboratory testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and structural materials for engineering and construction applications.

Depending on experience and certifications, responsibilities range from sample preparation and basic laboratory testing to advanced field inspections, special inspections for code compliance, and technical guidance for project teams. Successful candidates will contribute to high-profile infrastructure and building projects while receiving training, professional development, and opportunities for advancement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Laboratory & Field Testing:

    • Conduct tests on soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete following ASTM, ACI, AASHTO, and DOT standards.

    • Prepare, label, cure, and track samples; maintain accurate temperature and curing records.

    • Retrieve and transport test specimens from project sites.

    • Operate, maintain, and calibrate equipment, including nuclear density gauges, in compliance with safety standards.

  • Inspections & Compliance:

    • Review project drawings, specifications, and building codes for compliance.

    • Perform field inspections of foundations, reinforced concrete, masonry, fireproofing, and post-tensioned systems.

    • Document observations, discrepancies, and test results; promptly communicate non-conformance to project teams.

    • Conduct Special Inspections in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

  • Communication & Reporting:

    • Prepare concise, accurate daily reports of inspections and testing activities.

    • Collaborate with contractors, engineers, and project managers to resolve issues.

    • Provide technical guidance to junior staff as experience increases.

  • General Responsibilities:

    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory and fieldwork environment.

    • Participate in training and pursue certifications to expand qualifications.

    • Perform other duties as assigned to support peak workloads and project deadlines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Technology preferred for senior levels).

  • Strong arithmetic, reading, and writing skills; ability to prepare technical reports.

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

  • Clean driving record (no more than two violations in the last 36 months).

  • Willingness to work in varying weather and construction site conditions.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and maneuver construction sites.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Entry Level (Laboratory Technician):

    • No prior certifications required at hire.

    • Must obtain ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician certification within 90 days.

  • Intermediate Level (Field Technician / Inspector):

    • ACI Field Testing Grade I certification.

    • Additional certifications (NICET, ICC, DOT, PTI) preferred.

  • Senior Level (Senior Inspector / Senior Engineering Technician):

    • Minimum five years of inspection/testing experience.

    • ACI Field Grade I plus at least one ICC certification (Soils, Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Fireproofing, Structural Steel & Bolting).

    • Other certifications such as CWI, NICET, PTI Level I/II considered beneficial.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in construction materials testing (lab and/or field).

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and field data collection software.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to mentor and train junior staff.
