The Earthwork/Utility Estimator is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of projects to be bid. He or she prepares bids, selects vendors/subcontractors, and estimates self-perform crew compositions and production rates. He or she performs quantity take-offs using a complete and detailed understanding of the project scope.

Essential Functions

  • Quantify project components assigned by the lead estimator
  • Perform earthwork and underground (stormwater and wet utility) takeoffs and pricing for heavy civil projects
  • Evaluate and prepare self-perform and subcontract cost estimates of assigned discipline items
  • Visit project to understand site conditions/restrictions
  • Work with other estimating team members to build the estimate, then price assigned items in Hard Dollar
  • Review plans and specifications
  • Provide accurate take-offs
  • Analyze and enter quotes into Hard Dollar
  • Handle solicitation of subcontractors and vendors for their discipline of work
  • Assist with meeting DBE participation goals through vendor and subcontractor solicitations
  • Establish relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and specialty services

Required Skills & Experience 

  • 5-10 years of experience as an Estimator working on earthwork, grading or underground projects
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or similar discipline is preferred
  • Field operations experience is strongly preferred
  • Strong prioritization and organizational skills; detail-oriented
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft programs such as Excel and Word
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Additional working knowledge preferred but not required: Hard Dollar, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Agtek, and HCSS (Heavy Bid)
  • Flexibility with relocation for assigned projects
