Ascension Search Partners has been engaged by an established, mission-driven educational institution to identify a Director of Finance. This individual will lead the school’s financial and administrative operations and partner closely with senior leadership to support long-term financial sustainability and operational effectiveness.

Position Overview

The Director of Finance serves as a key member of the school’s leadership team and oversees the financial and business operations of the organization. Reporting to the Head of School and collaborating with the Board of Trustees, this role provides leadership across financial management, budgeting, accounting, and operational administration.

In addition to overseeing core finance functions, the Director of Finance also supports human resources administration and employee programs, ensuring the organization maintains strong financial controls, compliant HR practices, and efficient internal operations. The position supervises one direct report and works closely with leadership across departments.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead all financial operations including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, payroll oversight, and cash management.

• Prepare monthly financial statements, forecasts, and financial insights for senior leadership and the Board.

• Maintain strong internal controls and coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance.

• Partner with leadership on the development and oversight of the annual operating budget and financial planning initiatives.

• Monitor cash flow, banking relationships, and financial performance to support long-term financial stability.

• Oversee HR administration including payroll processes, employee benefits coordination, onboarding support, and maintenance of employee records.

• Ensure compliance with employment policies, benefits administration, and applicable employment regulations.

• Manage tuition billing, collections, and financial aid processes in partnership with admissions and administrative teams.

• Support accurate financial documentation related to grants, donations, and institutional funding.

Background & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; advanced degree preferred.

• Financial leadership experience, ideally within nonprofit, education, or mission-driven organizations.

• Strong understanding of GAAP, accrual accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting.

• Experience supporting audit processes and nonprofit tax reporting.

• Familiarity with HR administration, payroll processes, and employee benefit programs.

• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

• High level of professionalism, integrity, and commitment to confidentiality.
