CooperDouglas is partnering with a privately held, well-capitalized manufacturer in the East Valley to identify a Controller. This is the senior accounting seat, reporting directly to the CFO, with ownership of the close, inventory and cost accounting, and the controls environment. The company is moving from startup footing to a scaled commercial operation, and the systems and processes are being built now rather than inherited. Candidates who want a defined playbook handed to them will not enjoy this role. Candidates who want to write one will.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Run the full close cycle each month, quarter, and year end, from journal entries and reconciliations through issued financial statements
  • Reduce the current close timeline and install the discipline to hold it
  • Own inventory and cost accounting for a manufacturing environment, including valuation, standard costing, variance analysis, and product cost allocation
  • Build, document, and maintain internal controls and accounting policies appropriate for a company scaling out of startup stage
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll accounting
  • Manage cash forecasting and reporting
  • Prepare monthly reporting packages and walk department leaders through actual results against budget, identifying variances early rather than explaining them late
  • Lead the annual audit and serve as the primary contact for external auditors and tax advisors
  • Take a lead role in evaluating, selecting, and implementing a new ERP to replace an entry-level accounting system
  • Partner with the CFO on annual budgeting and build out forecasting and analysis over time
  • Supervise, review, and develop a team of three, with additional headcount planned
  • Prepare supporting materials for investor and board reporting

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Public accounting experience, Big 4 or a national or large regional firm
  • Manufacturing experience with direct ownership of inventory and cost accounting
  • Demonstrated ownership of a full close cycle with minimal oversight
  • Working knowledge of US GAAP
  • Strong Excel skills
  • PREFERRED

CPA

  • Experience selecting or implementing a mid-market ERP
  • Experience in a startup or high-growth environment
  • Interest in building out FP&A and analytics alongside the accounting function

Compensation for this role includes a base of up to $160,000 + 20% Bonus & Excellent benefits.
