Project Accountant – Residential & Commercial ConstructionLocation: San Mateo, CAReports To: Controller

Overview:Our client, a well-established residential and commercial construction company, is seeking a skilled Project Accountant to join their accounting team of five. The company has a strong reputation for delivering high-quality projects on time and within budget, and they use Viewpoint software for all construction accounting functions.

Position Summary:The Project Accountant will be responsible for managing the financial aspects of multiple construction projects, ensuring accurate job cost tracking, compliance with contracts, and timely reporting. This role will work closely with Project Managers, the Controller, and other accounting team members to support projects from start to finish.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee project-related accounting functions, including job cost tracking, budget monitoring, and variance analysis.

  • Review and process subcontractor invoices, purchase orders, and change orders in Viewpoint.

  • Prepare monthly WIP schedules, progress billings, and lien waivers.

  • Reconcile project costs, identify discrepancies, and update Project Managers as needed.

  • Maintain organized and accurate project files in accordance with company policies and contractual requirements.

  • Assist with contract administration, including reviewing payment terms and retention requirements.

  • Support month-end and year-end close processes in collaboration with the accounting team.

  • Provide financial reporting and cash flow projections for active projects.

  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and internal controls.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of accounting experience in the construction industry, with exposure to both residential and commercial projects.

  • Strong understanding of job cost accounting, AIA billing, and contract administration.

  • Proficiency in Viewpoint construction software is required.

  • Advanced Excel skills and ability to analyze large datasets.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
