C.Scale seeks a Head of Engineering to lead our engineering work at the bleeding edge of data-driven decarbonization. We are targeting gigaton-scale climate mitigation in the building sector—responsible for more than one-third of the world’s emissions. Our software and data products help architects, engineers, planners, and real estate professionals measure and manage their emissions, overcome data scarcity, and spend more time on their core responsibilities. To do this, we need to solve foundational data issues and support our users in their mission of fundamentally transforming the way buildings are designed and operated.
We’re the team behind the C.Scale web platform, Autodesk Forma’s embodied carbon analysis, Galvanize Climate Solutions’ GOLD tool, Schneider Electric’s Building Decarbonization Calculator, and more.
Core Responsibilities
The Head of Engineering will lead our growing engineering organization. This position will have 6 direct reports (a hybrid team of contractors and FTE). The role reports to the CEO.
• Technical excellence. Champion best practices, build scalable architectures, and approach each new challenge with a pragmatic outlook. At every juncture, the Head of Engineering will work across scales to ensure work is well-patterned, thoughtful, and cohesive within the larger technical architecture.
• Mentorship and management. The Head of Engineering will be a mentor and manager to the engineering organization, investing time and resources in helping everyone do their best work. This means building a culture of trust and collaboration while sequencing complex projects into simple tasks, picking up slack, and allocating work to keep everyone engaged.
• Own the engineering roadmap. The Head of Engineering will own the engineering roadmap in coordination with product, helping the organization as a whole to see around corners. Their work will enable C.Scale to accelerate product velocity, execute incremental refactors of production systems, and maintain high levels of stability.
• Build C.Scale’s engineering organization. The Head of Engineering will recruit and retain the best and brightest engineers to build an engineering organization dedicated to solving fundamental challenges in design and decarbonization of the built environment.
Our Tech Stack
Our front-end application is built in Next.JS and connected to a serverless Postgres. General infrastructure needs are all served on AWS. The calculation API uses advanced statistical
techniques, heuristic approaches, and applied AI to support complex multi-step analysis; it’s built in pure Python and exposed via FastAPI.
Preferred Qualities
In this search, C.Scale will prefer candidates who are:
• A serial 0-1 builder with a track record of designing, developing, and launching new products or systems in fast-paced and resource-constrained environments. • A pragmatist who can build in complex domains, wring clarity from ambiguity, and identify the right tool and the right job.
• A systems thinker who has successfully defined foundational technical patterns, interfaces, and infrastructure enabling small teams to move fast while managing technical debt.
• A culture catalyst creating environments where talented engineers who agrees that the best work happens when talented engineers are supported, challenged, and enjoying the journey.
Preferred Qualifications
• BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, or related fields such as physics, mathematics, or engineering.
• Proven Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience in a start-up environment designing and/or building SaaS products from the ground up.
• Cursory knowledge of the building sector.
• Experience working with big messy datasets.
Benefits, Compensation, and Equal Opportunity Employment
This is a full-time salaried position with an anticipated starting salary range between $170,000 and $220,000, depending on experience, with room for advancement. Equity options may be available at company milestones.
