Materials Manager – Chattanooga, TN
Global Tier 1 Automotive Supplier (Formed Plastic Components)

My client, a global Tier 1 automotive supplier specializing in formed plastic components, is seeking an experienced Materials Manager for its Chattanooga, TN manufacturing plant.

Automotive (Tier 1 or Tier 2) experience is required—no exceptions.

Position Overview

The Materials Manager is a key member of the plant leadership team and is responsible for overseeing all materials, inventory, scheduling, and logistics functions to support efficient and cost-effective plant operations. This role manages the full materials department, including certain office/reception and HS&E functions as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a core contributor on the plant management team.

  • Lead and supervise all materials department personnel, including office/reception and designated HS&E responsibilities according to WCFP HS&E Appendix A and applicable WPS tasks.

  • Oversee production scheduling, raw material planning, and maintenance of optimal raw material and finished-goods inventory levels.

  • Manage warehousing, shipping, and receiving operations.

  • Review, analyze, and interpret customer releases.

  • Perform MRP activities and issue vendor releases.

  • Drive optimization of freight utilization and cost.

  • Maintain AS400 system accuracy and serve as liaison with the IT department.

  • Develop, manage, and maintain the department’s operating budget.

  • Ensure implementation and adherence to safe work practices.

  • Provide backup support for receiving activities as needed.

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Expertise in computerized materials planning, inventory control, production scheduling, purchasing, traffic, warehousing, and shipping/receiving within a JIT manufacturing environment.

  • Proficiency with ERP systems, including AS400, AS36, or comparable platforms.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, leadership, and team-building skills.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documentation.

  • Ability to handle sensitive inquiries and resolve issues effectively.

  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex or controversial topics to senior management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; or

  • One to two years of relevant experience and/or training; or

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
