JOB SUMMARY:  Will direct, monitor, and participate in the preventative maintenance, electrical safety, and equipment repair programs for the biomedical equipment at this Hospital.  Maintains preventative maintenance records on all equipment included in the program. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in QI activities.  Assures competency of all personnel.  Assists in formulating the budget.  Maintains efficient and effective department operation while requiring compliance with all JCAHO, state, federal, and local regulatory laws, standards, and protocols.

PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKSEssential Function1.    Repair, install, maintain, calibrate, and inspect medical equipment and instrumentation, including life support equipment.a.    Perform biomedical equipment repairs and tests on all new and repaired equipment prior to being put into service.b.    Perform preventative maintenance and electrical safety testing of clinical equipment, devices, and systems.c.    Reports to the Plant Operations Manager as to the condition of hospital biomed equipment, and progress of work being accomplished.d.    Diagnose and correct system and equipment malfunctions.e.    Maintain documentation on new equipment, inspections, and equipment repairs and failures.f.    Assist with and evaluate third-party repairs.g.    Assists in evaluating new equipment for purchase.h.    Provide technical assistance and instruction to personnel regarding equipment operation and maintenance.i.    Provide technical support on new and replaced equipment.j.    Responsible for keeping current on new developments in biomedical equipment and systems.k.    Review the outcome of preventative maintenance actions and recommend improvements to department staff.l.    Provide mentoring to other biomedical equipment technicians.m.  Provide in-service educational programs on the use of equipmentn.   Order selected stock items and parts needed.o.   Assist in maintaining records to ensure compliance with state, federal, and joint commission regulations.p.    Participates in performance improvement and information management programs.q.    Interprets hospital policies to staff and enforces safety regulationsr.    Maintains age-specific safety precautions including:No small or sharp objects or tools that may injure pediatric patients or visitors will be left out.Elderly – hallways and pathways will be free of debris, equipment, tools, and liquid spills.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    Associate degree in electronics technology or equivalent technical training, i.e. technical school, or equivalent work experience.

Work Experience:    Minimum of 3 years related biomed experience and/or training.  Prefer background in a hospital environment.

Skill Requirements:    Ability to work well with others.  Ability to read, comprehend, and follow complex technical instructions.  Demonstrated mechanical and electrical aptitude.  Ability to work in accordance with hospital/engineering safe practices.  Able to work swing or night shifts as required. Ability and willingness to participate in continuing education.  Ability to work with minimal supervision.  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Licensing Requirements:    Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician - PreferredMust sign Hospital Drivers AgreementProvide a Valid California Driver's License – upon hire and prior to expirationProvide Current DMV Records – upon hire and annually during the anniversary monthProvide Proof of California mandatory limits of liability motor vehicle insurance – upon hire and prior to expiration.

Physical Demands:    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit, use hands or fingers, and handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
