Position Overview

We are seeking an EHS Process Safety Engineer to join our Award-Winning Client's team in Salt Lake City. This role will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and mitigating process hazards within a highly regulated manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate will be experienced in Process Safety Management (PSM) and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), bringing a strong technical background to support continuous safety improvements, regulatory compliance, and the development of a robust safety culture across the site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead efforts to identify and evaluate process hazards, developing effective mitigation strategies to minimize risks and ensure safety compliance.
  • Design and implement comprehensive High Hazard/Process Safety Management (HH/PSM) programs, ensuring that all safety processes are followed and risks are managed.
  • Conduct Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and follow up on findings to ensure corrective actions are executed in a timely manner.
  • Track and report key performance indicators (KPIs), both leading and lagging, to assess the progress of the HH/PSM program.
  • Lead PHA activities for both new and existing processes to ensure alignment with safety and operational standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess, modify, and implement new processes and facility changes to meet safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide oversight and manage the Management of Change (MOC) process, ensuring that all changes to processes and operations comply with safety regulations.
  • Manage and track the site’s PHA schedule and ensure timely implementation of safety recommendations.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for incidents and near misses across the Sandy plant, providing actionable recommendations for improvements.
  • Conduct Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR) for site projects, ensuring compliance with safety protocols before project launches.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs to site personnel, fostering a culture of safety awareness and compliance.
  • Work with regulatory authorities to secure permits, manage inspections, and address any regulatory inquiries.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of safety regulations, particularly around flammable liquids, ethylene oxide sterilization, and combustible dust.
  • Serve as an active participant in BDX's HH/PSM network, sharing best practices and collaborating on process improvements.
  • Partner with insurance representatives and Facilities teams to ensure safety measures align with insurance requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Process Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience leading EHS processes in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with the 14 elements of Process Safety Management (PSM) and the EPA’s Risk Management Plan (RMP) rule.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal and state safety and environmental laws, including the ability to identify hazards and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in commonly used computer software and databases (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work across technical teams, business leaders, operators, and maintenance staff.
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities and the ability to offer accurate solutions to complex challenges.
  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Ability to build strong business partnerships and lead cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience in a PSM or RMP regulated environment.
  • Functional Safety Certifications (Certified Safety Specialist, Certified Industrial Hygienist), or Six Sigma Green or Black Belt.
  • Experience with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 50001 compliance, with auditor certification or a willingness to pursue certification.
  • Experience with Fire Loss Prevention activities and collaboration with insurance carriers.
