Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Loss Control Engineer to provide consultative risk assessment and property engineering services for Highly Protected Risk (HPR) commercial accounts on a contract basis. This individual will work independently to evaluate insured facilities, identify potential property loss exposures, and deliver actionable recommendations that reduce loss frequency and severity while supporting underwriting decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct on-site and virtual risk evaluations for complex industrial, commercial, and manufacturing facilities.
  • Perform engineering analysis on fire protection systems, process hazards, combustible loading, and building construction in accordance with NFPA, FM Global, and HPR best-practice guidelines.
  • Prepare detailed engineering reports summarizing findings, risk quality ratings, and recommendations for improvement.
  • Collaborate remotely with underwriting, claims, and risk management teams to support account selection, renewal, and retention strategies.
  • Engage with client facility and safety management teams to implement practical, cost-effective loss prevention measures.
  • Evaluate and model natural catastrophe exposures (wind, flood, earthquake) using engineering judgment and available data tools.
  • Conduct virtual follow-ups and site visits (as needed) to confirm completion of recommendations and verify system reliability.
  • Integrate advanced risk assessment technologies—such as IoT sensors, drone inspections, and predictive analytics—into property evaluations.
  • Stay current on evolving codes, standards, and risk mitigation technologies relevant to property risk engineering.

Qualifications:

Education & Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or CFPS (Certified Fire Protection Specialist) preferred.
  • NFPA or FM Global training and familiarity with loss prevention data sheets a plus.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5–10 years in property loss control or HPR engineering—experience with industrial or manufacturing occupancies strongly preferred.
  • Background with major property carriers, risk engineering firms, or HPR service providers highly desirable.
  • Strong experience evaluating and designing fire protection and detection systems.
  • Proven ability to analyze fire and explosion hazards, production processes, and critical equipment exposures.
  • Understanding of property underwriting principles and risk quality grading.

Skills:

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and technical writing abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, data visualization, and risk modeling tools.
  • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision in a client-facing environment.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple concurrent engagements.
  • Willingness to travel regionally as needed for site visits (typically <25%).

Engagement Details:

  • Type: Independent Contractor (1099 or corporate-to-corporate arrangement)
  • Compensation: Competitive hourly or per-assignment rate commensurate with experience
  • Duration: Ongoing or project-based
  • Travel: Limited and scheduled in advance

Why This Opportunity:

This contract role offers flexibility, autonomy, and exposure to a diverse portfolio of high-value commercial and industrial clients. It’s ideal for an experienced HPR engineer seeking to leverage their technical expertise across multiple industries while maintaining a remote work structure.
