Technical Engineer Job Description

 

The Technical Engineer serves as a discipline-specific technical expert, ensuring construction activities meet professional standards. Under direct supervision, the engineer independently applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, exercising judgment for minor adaptations. With increased experience, they support the design of larger, conventional projects, including plans, investigations, and surveys with established precedents. The role involves working in a multi-disciplinary environment, providing structural design reviews and resolving structural issues during construction for projects such as bridges (3–6 spans with precast girders), aqueducts, retaining walls, culverts, and inlets.

Responsibilities:

- Review calculations, drawings, bills of quantities, technical specifications, design/installation packages, proposal evaluations, technical reports, and analyses for procurement and construction.

- Coordinate with construction teams for monthly progress updates.

- Prepare Request for Information (RFI) to address technical issues.

- Guide CAD Designers/Drafters, Designers, and Engineers on the same project.

- Review supplier drawing submittals, shop drawings, and respond to field RFIs; conduct technical bid analyses.

- Perform periodic onsite inspections for structural issues.

- Review temporary works (e.g., girder erection, formworks) developed by others.

- Verify as-built information aligns with final site solutions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Proficient in preparing and reviewing Cut and Bend lists.

- Extensive expertise in checking designs, calculations, specifications, and drawings.

- Advanced computer skills: Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Blue Beam.

- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

- Strong communication skills with management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and visitors.

- Knowledge of applicable local, state/province, and federal regulations.

- Detail-oriented with time-conscious work habits.

Requirements:

- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Structural, or Technical Engineering from an accredited program.

- 2+ years of technical engineering experience, preferably in a contractor’s technical department.

- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and Blue Beam.
