Assistant Nurse Manager, NICU 

Hours: 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM

$180,000 – $200,000 + 10% Bonus

Job Summary

The Assistant Nurse Manager assists with the implementation of best practice models and patient care delivery systems. They support investigations into patient and family concerns, and collaborate with physicians and other healthcare team members to ensure safe and optimal patient care. This role is responsible for allocating resources, supervising the use of equipment and supplies, and maintaining a safe environment for both patients and staff. The Assistant Nurse Manager also maintains clinical expertise, provides clinical supervision, and delegates tasks and duties appropriately while performing clinical duties as required.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Supervision and Leadership: Recommends developmental opportunities, provides performance feedback, and mentors team members. This role supervises the daily activities of the team, ensures all policies and procedures are followed, and develops work plans to meet business priorities and deadlines. They also remove obstacles that impact performance and influence teams to align with operational objectives.

  • Administrative and Operational Oversight: This role supervises hospital administrative functions, facilitates team meetings, and monitors utilization and productivity to meet performance targets. The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for collecting and interpreting data, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and managing budget targets through appropriate staffing and resource allocation.

  • Care Delivery Management: Manages care delivery operations within a 24/7 environment. This includes supervising daily operational activities, coordinating resources to ensure appropriate assignment and utilization, and holding multidisciplinary teams accountable for performance. The position also helps implement and monitor emergency preparedness programs and ensures staff are trained on the recovery plans.

  • Process Improvement: Executes the work of cross-functional teams on strategic projects aimed at improving quality, service, and efficiency. They respond to escalations to address quality and safety issues and monitor performance metrics to track the success of these improvement projects.

  • Quality and Safety Assurance: Ensures safe, high-quality, and standardized care delivery. The Assistant Nurse Manager monitors the continuous improvement of clinical practices, ensures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements (e.g., Nursing Practice Act, The Joint Commission), and contributes to the design of systems to evaluate and improve patient care.

Qualifications

  • Required Skills: Excellent people skills and effective management skills.

  • Minimum Experience:

    • Two (2) years of minimum NICU RN experience in a Level III or higher.

    • One (1) year of RN or RN NICU leadership experience. Examples include: Charge Nurse, Clinical Coordinator, Supervisor, Assistant Nurse Manager, Nurse Manager. Must have a formal title. Relief Charge Nurse experience will not be accepted.

  • Minimum Education: BSN or MSN.

  • Must-Have Certifications/Licenses:

    • Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license.

    • BLS, NRP, and RNC-NIC certifications.

    • RNC-NIC is required within 6 months from the hire date.

  • Less Common Requirements: Experience with unions from a management perspective.

  • Industry Experience: NICU experience in an acute care hospital.
