IMPACT YOU WILL HAVE

The Linux Systems Administrator / Network Engineer IV will be responsible for the design and certification of mission critical network services. This position offers a unique opportunity to excel in both System Administration as a subject matter expert and in network technologies by working alongside network engineers.  The ideal candidate will enjoy solving complex problems and should be consistently pushing the limits of current technology while broadening their skillset beyond systems administration.

LOCATION

This global company is based in Reston, VA. This person is expected to work a hybrid schedule and be in the office 2-3 days per week initially, then 1-2 days per week. Applicants must live within a 70 miles radius or have a compelling reason to move to the area upon conversion to full-time employee.

 

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE

  • Provide the support and testing of Linux and VMWare based network tools and appliances with a secondary objective of assisting and eventually leading projects that are network-based.
  • Proactively acquire deep understanding of Company's applications and operational environments.
  • Offer critical technical leadership in the areas of design development, technology best-practice and support in testing
  • Perform daily support of the lab, non-production, and production infrastructure in adherence with standards and compliance.
  • Display technical leadership in the areas of operational process and change management.
  • Coordinate with other technical staff to implement high quality, architecturally sound systems and software that align with business needs.
  • Liaise between architecture and operations teams. Take high level design artifacts and deliver production ready solutions by understanding the needs and processes of the operations teams.
  • Research and integrate industry standard methodologies in network and system orchestration and configuration management.
  • Document processes, procedures, designs, and topology as needed to satisfy project requirements.
  • Coordinate with other technical staff to implement systems and relevant network configurations.
  • Apply an automation mindset in both configuration management and in test case automation for continual improvement.
  • Assist operations in the deployment and troubleshooting of production issues.
  • Document work tasks and changes in tools such as Confluence, JIRA and ServiceNow.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on call rotation after conversation to FTE (once every five weeks).

The successful candidate has strong technical and organizational skills, thrives in a team environment, and is a self-starter capable of adapting to changing priorities. This implies that they will be an effective communicator who works well within a matrixed environment to deliver standardized, network specific projects. A high level of technical skills and relevant experience are essential to success.

 

IDEAL BACKGROUND (Items in BOLD are most important)

  • Experience: 10+ years of experience administering systems in a production operations environment.
  • Professional experience with Linux system administration and Network administration in a production environment.
  • Hands-on work with Red Hat Enterprise Linux or equivalent Unix OS is desired. RHCSA certification is preferred.
  • Adept at UNIX utilities and scripting with Python. Will consider other languages such as Perl, Ansible, Shell, Golang, etc.
  • Strong understanding of network protocols, especially BGP (Border Gateway Protocol).
  • Desire to increase knowledge and understanding of network device configurations.
  • Experience with Cloud (AWS preferred) environments.
  • Exposure to automating production processes and procedures is desired.
  • Proficiency with a version control system such as Git.
  • Skilled at documenting work tasks and changes in tools such as JIRA and ServiceNow.
  • Able to participate in an on-call rotation after conversion to FTE (once every 4-5 weeks)
  • Willing to work on a contract to hire basis
  • Local (within 70 miles) to the Reston, VA 
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • OpenStack, Kubernetes or other cloud technologies
  • AAA systems
  • Cisco ISE
  • SNMP and SNMP Trap based Network Management systems
  • Micro Focus Network Automation (MFNA)
  • Additional Protocols: TCP/UDP, IP, etc.
