About Estes Rockets

Estes Rockets, a pioneer in model rocketry for over 65 years, inspires creativity, STEM education, and the joy of exploration. We are seeking a Controller to join our team. The Controller will report to the Vice President & General Manager and collaborate closely with the Executive Staff to plan and direct the company's accounting operations, while overseeing the financial team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Leadership & Oversight:
    • Lead the finance team in the accurate, efficient, and timely management of financial operations.
    • Provide strategic guidance and oversight across all financial activities, ensuring full accountability for funds and expenditures.
  • Budgeting & Cash Flow Management:
    • Directly responsible for the development, monitoring, and reporting of the annual operating budget.
    • Lead short- and long-term budget projections and cash flow forecasts to align financial health with growth goals.
  • Financial Reporting & Analysis:
    • Produce detailed monthly financial statements and reports, including cost center expense reports.
    • Provide analysis of financial performance and strategic insights for organizational leadership.
  • Asset Management:
    • Oversee financial management of fixed assets, ensuring proper tracking, depreciation, and compliance.
  • Audit Management:
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and manage the annual audit process.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and standards.
  • Accounting System Management:
    • Maintain and enhance the accounting system, overseeing all financial operations (journal entries, AP, AR, bank reconciliations, cost allocation, depreciation).
  • Billing & Collection:
    • Oversee enrollment billing and collections processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Staff Leadership & Development:
    • Provide leadership, mentoring, and guidance to the finance team, fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Identify opportunities for process improvements and system efficiencies.

Skills/Requirements:

  • Experience with accounting systems and financial software.
  • Proven ability to lead and scale financial operations during growth.
  • Strong leadership, with team development and cross-department collaboration skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Power BI) and database management tools.
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial forecasting and long-term planning (preferred).
  • Experience managing finance during expansion (preferred).
  • Self-motivated and self-directed, with a strong sense of ownership.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Positive attitude, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster collaboration.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of progressive finance experience, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Manufacturing, consumer goods, and/or inventory-based business experience
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
