Our client, a respected social services organization based in Oakland, is seeking a full-time Controller to join their dynamic team. In this key leadership role, the Controller will manage essential accounting operations, including the preparation of monthly financial statements, coordination of four annual audits, and financial reporting for internal and external stakeholders. The Controller will directly supervise the Accounting Manager and report to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).This position offers a competitive annual salary range of $165,000 to $175,000 and follows a hybrid work model (onsite/remote).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review and present monthly consolidated financial statements to the executive management team.
  • Oversee monthly close process, including adjusting journal entries and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
  • Ensure accurate and timely closing of the general ledger and issuance of financial statements.
  • Lead the preparation, testing, and completion of annual audits, including:
    • Financial Statement Audit
    • ESOP Audit
    • Receivables Audit
    • Workers’ Compensation Audit
    • (Prior ESOP experience is a plus but not required.)
  • Oversee annual ESOP compliance reporting (training will be provided as needed).
  • Manage audit timelines and proactively communicate updates or issues to the CFO.
  • Review and revise draft responses to “Provided by Client (PBC)” requests from auditors.
  • Review year-end payroll data, prepare census documentation, and support the firm’s annual valuation process.
  • Analyze accounting data for reporting purposes, often involving advanced Excel functions and complex data manipulation.
  • Support reporting deliverables such as:
    • Company performance metrics for the CFO
    • Annual rate submissions
    • Insurance applications and renewals
  • Develop and implement effective financial controls and accounting procedures to safeguard company assets.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department heads, aligning financial plans with strategic goals.
  • Analyze historical financial data and forecast future performance to inform budget planning.
  • Ensure timely submission of the annual budget for executive review.
  • Monitor budget performance throughout the year, identifying variances and recommending course corrections.
  • Support strategic growth and efficiency initiatives, including:
    • Integration of acquired companies
    • Implementation of AI-based process improvements
    • Rollout of instant pay solutions for direct service providers
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
  • Active CPA license is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience with Sage Intacct.
  • Prior experience implementing or rolling out new software applications is preferred.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly:
    • Excel: Advanced skills required, including pivot tables, XLOOKUP, IF/THEN formulas, and large data set manipulation.
    • Word and PowerPoint: Strong presentation and document formatting skills.
  • 10-key touch proficiency and solid typing abilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster collaboration within teams and across departments.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background check, including Department of Justice clearance, is required prior to hire.
  • Must complete Harassment Prevention and California Mandated Reporter trainings upon onboarding.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 
  • May be tasked with lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 25 lbs., if able to do so.
  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time and walk/stand for moderate periods of time.
  • Must be able to bend at the knees and waist frequently
  • Must be able to repetitively use a telephone and a computer mouse and keyboard.
