We are conducting a search for an experienced Director of Business Development (Litigation) with a minimum of 12 years' relevant experience in law firm or professional services marketing.
 
 
Position can be based in the San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. or New York office. 

 

What You'll Do:

The Director of Business Development is responsible for devising and executing business development strategies, initiatives, and plans tailored to the needs of our litigation practices. Leading the business development team dedicated to supporting litigation, this role involves establishing both strategic and operational objectives, metrics, and priorities aimed at expanding demand. Leveraging extensive knowledge of litigation practices and client engagement with external counsel, the Director serves as a visionary in business development and specialized marketing techniques. Additionally, close collaboration with the communications team is integral for crafting media relations strategies, with a focus on securing prominent placements on key lists and directories relevant to our industry.

  • Collaborating closely with practice groups, senior business development staff, and other key stakeholders, develop strategic goals, actionable plans, and budgets to drive business development objectives of the firm’s litigation practices.
  • Advise team members on the development of concise and actionable business development plans for individual practices and attorneys. Consistently demonstrate the value that Marketing Department resources can bring to bear in meeting the firm’s financial and practice goals.
  • Advise litigation partners on a broad range of business development and marketing strategies, demonstrating depth of expertise and understanding of practice group and industry norms, terms, and business procedures. Encourage engagement and collaboration by facilitating the development of business plans within each group and other relevant practice groups.
  • Lead firmwide business development initiatives, not limited to the Litigation Department. Examples include rolling out new business development resources for partners (such as an updated business development toolkit on the internal portal), implementing win/loss client interviews firmwide, and implementing clear processes for collaborating across business development teams, among others.
  • Serve as an active, collaborative member of the BD Leadership Team. Support and enable the “one firm” approach to business development.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact to the Litigation Department Chairs on business development initiatives. Develop strong relationships with litigation attorneys across the firm, demonstrating a deep understanding of litigation practices and clients.
  • Manage the BD team supporting the firm’s litigation practices, serving as a thought leader to the team on developing business for the firm. Ensure the highest quality of service for internal and external clients. Identify development paths for junior team members and implement training and other growth opportunities for the team. Ensure a thoughtful, equitable deployment of resources.

 

What You'll Bring:      

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, MBA or JD preferred.
  • At least 12 years of relevant experience in professional services marketing; law firm experience preferred. Thorough knowledge of Business practice areas, with direct work experience a plus.
  • Expert knowledge of core marketing principles including driving innovative tools and programs, competitive intelligence, market research, and pitch and RFP responses.
  • Experience in leading a team of marketing professionals and driving success through high performance collaboration.
  • High degree of motivation, with driving sense of responsibility, accountability, and responsiveness.
  • Strong business acumen; the ability to recognize marketing and business development opportunities and to pursue them strategically.
  • Ability to quickly assess information, anticipate issues and outcomes, and make effective decisions, including ability to draw clear conclusions from a diverse collection of data.
