Job Title: Utilities Supervisor

Job SummaryWe are seeking an experienced and proactive Utilities Systems Supervisor to oversee the safe and efficient operation of our facility’s utility systems. This role involves supervising a team responsible for the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of high-pressure steam boilers, ammonia refrigeration, well water, potable water, hot water, HVAC systems, fire suppression systems, and air compressors. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in industrial systems, excellent troubleshooting skills, a proactive approach to safety and compliance, and a commitment to operational efficiency and team leadership.

Core Responsibilities

  • Supervise the operation, maintenance, and repair of high-pressure steam boilers, ammonia refrigeration systems, HVAC systems, pneumatic systems, and other utility systems.

  • Lead a team of operators and technicians by providing direction, support, training, and performance feedback.

  • Conduct daily rounds, equipment inspections, and monitor system readings to ensure functionality and compliance with safety standards.

  • Implement and assign preventative maintenance tasks to ensure optimal performance and reduce downtime.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

  • Maintain accurate records of system performance, maintenance schedules, and repairs.

  • Ensure compliance with all safety standards, regulations, and organizational policies.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address system needs and improvements.

  • Foster a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the team.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Must be able to work in the United States without sponsorship.

  • High school diploma or GED with 5+ years of related experience and/or training in an industrial mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing environment; or 5 years of direct experience in an industrial mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing maintenance environment.

  • General mechanical or electrical maintenance experience.

  • Ability to read, write, and orally communicate in English.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, any shift, and holidays as scheduled.

  • Must have Operator 1 and 2 training in NH3 and Boilers.

  • Must have the ability to achieve CIRO certification within 12 months.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ammonia refrigeration and boiler/steam system certifications or licenses.

  • At least one year of proven leadership experience in an industrial ammonia refrigeration and high-pressure steam environment.

  • Strong understanding of Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Plan (RMP) standards.

  • Knowledge of water treatment systems, air compressors, air conveyance systems, pumps, fire suppression, and HVAC systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability and willingness to learn, advance, and lead in both industrial ammonia refrigeration and high-pressure steam environments.

  • Ability and willingness to mentor and train team members.

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

  • Ability to perform and lead preventative, routine, and emergency maintenance and repairs.

  • Proficiency in communicating and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

  • Competency in taking and logging system readings to ensure proper functionality.

  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to maintaining safety, compliance, and operational standards.

  • Proactive in identifying potential issues and addressing them before they lead to system failures.

Work EnvironmentThe work environment includes exposure to wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area.

While performing the duties of this role, employees are occasionally required to stand, walk, or sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear.

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.

  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds utilizing the buddy system or specifically designed lifting devices.

  • Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and communicate effectively.
