Are you an accomplished leader in the geotechnical field looking for an exciting opportunity to guide a premier laboratory? We are seeking a dedicated Geotechnical Laboratory Technical Director to spearhead operations in a highly respected, fully accredited laboratory serving clients nationwide. This pivotal role offers the chance to lead a skilled team, uphold exceptional quality standards, and continue a legacy of impeccable technical audits.

This position is entirely lab-based, allowing you to concentrate on technical excellence and leadership without the demands of fieldwork or extensive travel, fostering a productive and supportive work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all laboratory operations, including team supervision, scheduling, equipment calibration, and resource allocation.
  • Oversee comprehensive geotechnical and construction materials testing, including methods such as:
    • Proctor, Atterberg Limits, grain size analysis
    • Unconfined compression, CU and UU triaxial, Direct Shear
    • Permeability, consolidation, CBR, and soil-cement testing
  • Ensure compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, GDOT, and internal quality management standards.
  • Maintain required accreditations and certifications, ensuring proficiency testing meets standards (AASHTO, USACE, GA DOT).
  • Implement quality assurance and safety protocols, adhering to QA/QC manuals approved by federal agencies.
  • Train and mentor laboratory staff to enhance technical skills and foster professional growth.
  • Confidently prepare for and lead internal and external audits.
  • Collaborate with clients to provide technical insights and customer-focused services.
  • Support business operations through effective reporting and documentation; experience with QuickBooks is advantageous.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Over 8 years of experience in geotechnical or construction materials testing, with a proven track record in laboratory leadership.
  • Strong understanding of ASTM, AASHTO standards, and state DOT requirements.
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills with the ability to inspire and develop a technical team.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with proven success in managing audits without deficiencies.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); QuickBooks knowledge is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred but not essential.
