Job Description: Operational Controller
Location: Newark, New Jersey (Located off Interstate 95 near Raymond Blvd., by Newark airport)

We are seeking a seasoned Operational Controller to lead the financial and accounting functions for a dynamic, fast-paced $40 million subcontractor in the fire protection and fire sprinkler space. This is a hands-on, high-impact leadership role that requires a confident, experienced professional capable of managing a tough, no-nonsense accounting team, streamlining financial processes, and driving performance through operational excellence.The ideal candidate will bring a construction or subcontracting industry background, deep knowledge of job costing, WIP accounting, and AP/AR, and a strong command of inventory, purchasing, and revenue recognition. You must be comfortable operating in a fast-moving, high-volume environment and be an effective change agent and team builder.
· Lead and mentor an experienced accounting team, including tough-skinned AP/AR personnel and in-house billing staff.
· Provide clear direction, accountability, and professional development opportunities.
· Oversee training of AP staff both on-site and off-shore (India team).
· Manage monthly book close (target: 2nd Tuesday of each month).
· Oversee and optimize Accounts Payable:
· - Supervise 3-way matching process.
· - Ensure timely processing of over 1,000 purchase orders/invoices per month.
· - Improve and streamline manual invoice processes.
· Oversee Accounts Receivable:
· - Collaborate with AR staff and Credit Manager.
· - Support billing accuracy and collections process.
· Own the Work-in-Progress (WIP) process, identifying weaknesses and implementing improvements.
· Drive effective job costing, cost tracking, and profitability by project.
· Collaborate with project managers and purchasing team for seamless coordination on inventory, procurement, and budget controls.
· Leverage Sage 300 and NetSuite to manage financial reporting, general ledger, and posting integrity.
· Troubleshoot system posting issues and streamline batch posting procedures.
· Improve integration and effectiveness of tech platforms supporting job costing and billing.
· Ensure proper revenue recognition based on project completion.
· Support audit processes, tax filings, and regulatory compliance.
· Act as a business partner to ownership and executive leadership, offering insights on financial strategy, risk management, and business planning.
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
· Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 3-5 years in a senior leadership role in the construction or subcontracting industry.
· Proficient in job costing, WIP accounting, and GAAP compliance.
· Proven ability to lead accounting teams in high-volume, fast-paced, and low-tolerance environments.
· Deep experience with Sage 300, NetSuite, and construction-specific accounting systems.
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and influence change.
