Role Overview
The Environmental Manager plays a crucial role in maintaining compliance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations while ensuring an efficient and environmentally responsible operation. Reporting directly to the Plant Manager, this individual will oversee environmental compliance in a multi-shift, 24/7 production facility. The plant operates under a Title V air permit, requiring stringent adherence to environmental standards. Collaboration with corporate environmental teams is key in this role.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance & Permitting:
- Maintain compliance with air permitting (Title V), water pollution prevention, hazardous & solid waste management, and spill response.
- Act as the primary liaison with ADEM, EPA, Health Department, and local authorities regarding permits, inspections, and environmental programs.
- Ensure that all operating permits are current for air emissions sources.
- Respond to inquiries from regulatory agencies and ensure timely permit renewals.
Environmental Program Management & Training:
- Develop, review, and update environmental policies and procedures in line with government regulations.
- Conduct employee training programs on hazardous waste handling, spill response, stormwater compliance, and emergency preparedness.
- Maintain industrial hygiene practices across all facilities, including offsite warehouse operations.
- Lead site-wide environmental audits, analyze findings, and drive corrective actions.
Hazard Prevention & Incident Response:
- Implement strategies to reduce process waste, reuse materials, and optimize recycling efforts.
- Monitor and manage the NESHAP Monitoring System for alarm detection and response.
- Conduct root cause analyses for any environmental deviations and oversee corrective action plans.
- Lead emergency response efforts related to environmental hazards, spills, and hazardous materials.
Operational Oversight & Continuous Improvement:
- Develop and manage the environmental budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.
- Ensure compliance with process water management, protecting groundwater and surface tributaries.
- Oversee environmental abatement equipment maintenance and inspections.
- Support and drive productivity improvements through sustainable initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with health and safety leadership to align environmental strategies.
Compliance Reporting & Documentation:
- Maintain detailed records for universal and hazardous waste inventory and disposal.
- Prepare and submit monthly reports on environmental performance.
- Ensure proper waste stream management and maintain up-to-date profiles for all waste materials.
Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.

5+ years of experience in environmental compliance within a manufacturing setting.
- Strong familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations (40 CFR, 49 CFR, Title V).
Technical & Job-Specific Skills:

Air Emissions & Title V Compliance (NESHAP monitoring, deviation reporting).

Waste Management & Environmental Protection (hazardous waste, recycling, stormwater, wastewater permits).

Regulatory Coordination (ADEM, EPA, Health Department, Local City Authorities).

Root Cause Analysis (RCCA, 5-Whys for environmental issues).

Industrial Hygiene & Emergency Preparedness.

Process Improvement & Lean Manufacturing strategies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access).

ISO 14001, SAP, and OSHA 30-Hour training (Preferred but not required).
Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Industrial manufacturing setting with exposure to heavy machinery, high noise levels, and temperature extremes.
- Frequent climbing ladders, negotiating catwalks, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Required PPE: safety-toed shoes, eye/ear protection, and respirators when necessary.
- Expected to spend 30% of time in the plant.

Schedule: Monday - Friday (6:30 AM – 4:30 PM), occasional weekend/on-call support.
