The Traveling Superintendent offers a unique opportunity to work on short term and long term projects at a variety of locations an multiple customers.
The Traveling Union Superintendent – Piping oversees field operations and skilled trade crews on industrial and commercial piping projects across multiple locations. This position ensures projects are executed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in full compliance with quality standards, contractual requirements, and union agreements. The Superintendent serves as the on-site leader, coordinating
between project management, field labor, subcontractors, and clients to deliver outstanding project
results.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership and Field Oversight:
- Direct and supervise all piping field operations and union craft workers.
- Manage day-to-day field activities to ensure project schedules, budgets, and quality objectives are met.
- Coordinate labor, materials, and equipment to maximize productivity and minimize downtime.
- Ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements and union labor practices.
Safety and Compliance
- Lead by example in promoting a strong safety culture.
- Conduct daily safety meetings, job hazard analyses, and inspections.
- Enforce OSHA, company, and client safety policies and immediately address unsafe conditions or behaviors.
Quality Assurance
- Oversee quality control processes for all piping installation, welding, and fabrication.
- Ensure all work meets specifications, codes, and client standards.
- Collaborate with QA/QC teams to resolve non-conformances promptly.
Coordination and Communication
- Serve as the primary on-site liaison between field teams, project management, engineering, and clients.
- Conduct coordination meetings with subcontractors, foremen, and stakeholders.
- Communicate daily progress, issues, and manpower needs to project leadership.
Labor and Resource Management
- Coordinate with union halls to dispatch skilled labor as needed for each project.
- Monitor crew performance, attendance, and adherence to project standards.
- Train, mentor, and evaluate field foremen and journeymen for skill development and leadership readiness.
Administrative and Reporting Duties
- Maintain accurate daily reports, timesheets, safety records, and project logs.
- Track production rates, material usage, and equipment needs.
- Participate in project planning, scheduling, and closeout meetings.
Qualifications
- Minimum 10+ years of piping construction experience, including 5+ years in a supervisory or superintendent role.
- Experience with industrial, commercial, or energy sector piping systems preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of piping materials, welding procedures, and blueprints.
- Familiarity with ASME, API, and OSHA standards.
- Proven ability to manage union labor and enforce collective bargaining agreements.
- Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Proficiency with construction management software (e.g., Procore, PlanGrid, MS Project).
- Ability to work on active job sites, including exposure to outdoor environments, noise, and construction activity.
- Frequent walking, standing, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work abroad up to 75–90% of the time. Working abroad/travel will be focused on short term and long term project assignments at various customer locations
