The Quality Engineer collaborates with project teams through APQP phases to prevent quality defects in product and process design and development. Responsibilities include statistical data analysis, reporting of measured quality results, and addressing quality issues in production. The role focuses on corrective actions for recurring or high-cost defects, driving towards zero defects.
 
Duties: Including but not limited to:
 
  • Support design and process engineering APQP efforts by applying established quality control disciplines.
  • Provide technical expertise in core Quality tools: APQP, MSA, SPC, FMEA, PPAP, Process Capability Studies.
  • Interpret technical drawings and specifications to ensure proper application of quality characteristics.
  • Contribute to DFMEA and PFMEA processes to address potential failure modes before production.
  • Ensure prevention/detection devices (fixtures, gauges, etc.) are incorporated in product development.
  • Conduct measurement system analysis (e.g., gage R&R studies) and analyze repeatability and reproducibility.
  • Prepare, analyze, and interpret control charts to maintain process stability.
  • Define and analyze process capability studies, identifying specifications and developing sampling plans.
  • Participate in pilot and pre-production runs to validate processes against Control Plans.
  • Investigate and seek corrective actions for internal MRB issues and monitor manufacturing MRBs.
  • Support Securing Quality initiatives by preparing and sharing quality information with production teams.
  • Perform statistical analysis and reporting of process and measured data.
  • Drive continual improvement to reduce costs, enhance quality, improve on-time delivery, and increase productivity.
  • Ensure compliance with QMS and EMS requirements.
 
Core Competencies:
 
  • Thorough understanding of company products and manufacturing processes.
  • Basic proficiency with Windchill software for data creation and storage.
  • Expertise in core Quality tools: APQP, PPAP, SPC, MSA, FMEA, Process Capability Studies.
  • Ability to lead MRB corrective actions and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Problem-solving ability, including root cause analysis (RCA) and facilitation of issue resolution.
  • Data-driven decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 standard requirements.
  • Ability to review Control Plans and FMEAs to ensure effective quality processes.
  • Proficiency in computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), web-based systems, Minitab, and JDE.
 
Qualifications:
 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field, or 5+ years of relevant experience with a certified Quality Engineering Certificate.
  • Familiarity with basic hand metrology equipment (e.g., gage blocks, calipers, micrometers, surface plate layouts, optical comparators).
  • CMM machine knowledge or experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5M and GD&T principles.
  • Understanding of x, y, z coordinate systems.
  • Quality Engineer or Quality Technician certification is desired.
 
Working Conditions: 
 
  • Office area in the plant is air-conditioned, providing excellent working conditions.
  • Requires normal or corrected vision with no color deficiency, normal depth perception, and 180-degree peripheral vision.
  • Safety glasses are mandatory in the plant production area.
  • Noise levels range from 50-80 dB; hearing protection is encouraged in high-noise areas.
  • Occasional travel, primarily in the Midwest, with potential international travel.
