Database Administrator - Senior
Company: Our Client
Client Location: Edmonton, Alberta (remote work but must be within Canada only due to network and data security issues; must be also available for onsite meetings when required)
Engagement Period: October 2024 to March 2025
 
Our client's Database Administration team is in the process of working on several large projects intended to optimize database operations. These projects are long-running and could potentially impact most applications of our client. The effort needed, per application, can be quite large and can impact operational duties of the team. By acquiring a resource, the team will be able to provide more effort in these initiatives and avoid costs faster or even reduce licensing costs overall. This resource will provide the labor while the staff members will provide the strategy and tactical thinking necessary to succeed.
 
These projects include:
  • Reviewing and consolidating SQL Server licensing costs or reducing licensing costs in the long term.
  • Implementing Database monitoring for the vast majority of our client database environment.
  • Creating new reporting and\or reporting options to highlight and elevate critical database issues to management.
 
Duties:
 
This role is responsible for building, maintaining, and performance tuning production databases to deliver databases with appropriate levels of data availability and performance. This role is also responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing database procedures and standards.
 
  • Provide technical expertise in database management systems to support systems development and operational activities.
  • Create and maintain the logical and physical structures of databases and related structures required by database applications.
  • Monitor database applications, databases and DBMS statistics and recommend the appropriate changes to improve performance.
  • Maintain database authorization requirements.
  • Maintain and enforce database security standards and procedures.
  • Evaluate application and user requirements and recommend appropriate database modifications.
  • Provide technical expertise to development teams, Application Maintenance Services and business teams if engaged.
  • Perform troubleshooting activities for database problems, database software problems and database application problems.
  • Perform DBMS software installations, plan and test upgrades.
  • Plan, test and implement software patches and application updates or upgrades.
  • Disaster recovery preparation and testing.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation.
  • Develop and automate system related procedures.
  • Perform problem diagnosis, troubleshooting and resolution.
  • Monitor on-going operations and perform on-going system administration tasks: release new versions; database tuning; capacity planning; historical archiving; database consistency and integrity checking; log file analysis; job scheduling; scripting; indexes; reorganizations; change control; and server requirements analysis.
Deliverable Details:
As this is an operational role and not a project-specific role, the deliverables and due dates will be created on an as-needed basis depending upon the skills of the acquired resource.
Our client recruit for specific needs. However, if this original need changes, our client reserves the right to allocate this role across projects within the program and/or information technology service based on approved business program plans and funding aligning to their priorities.
 
Mandatory Requirements:
 
Education:
The proposed resource must meet or exceed one of the following: 
  • University graduation in computer science or a related discipline and 4-yr relevant experience; OR 
  • 2-yr diploma in computer science or a related discipline and 6-yr relevant experience; OR 
  • 1-yr certificate in computer science or a related discipline and 7-yr relevant experience; OR 
  • a currently active professional certification or accreditation and 8-yr relevant experience
Other:
  • The proposed resource must agree to a Criminal Records Check and Enhanced Security Clearance prior to commencement.
Work Experience:
  • 8 years DBA experience within an environment of similar size and complexity with our client
  • 2 years Experience and technical knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server.
  • 4 years Experience as a SQL Infrastructure DBA (Backups, replication, installation, configuration)
  • 8 years Experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2016 or higher.
  • 4 years Experience with PowerBI, PowerView, Microsoft SQL Reporting, and Analytical Services.
  • 4 years Experience with SQL Server High Availability Groups
  • 6 years Experience working with querying data with Microsoft Transact-SQL Server.
Other Requirements:
  • 1 year Experience with Amazon Web Services databases
  • 1 year Experience with Azure SQL
  • 1 year Experience with migrating on-premise databases to Azure or AWS
  • 1 year Experience with open-source databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, CosmosDB, etc.
  • 1 year Experience with PowerBI querying Azure SQL
  • 1 year Experience with SQL Server Integration Services
  • 4 years Experience with SQL Server replication
  • 2 years Experience with troubleshooting performance issues within SQL Server 2016 or higher.
  • 4 years Experience working in a Help Desk type of environment where the work is delivered through a ticket or email.
  • 4 years Experience working in a multi-tenancy environment where developers do not have access to secured environments like User Acceptance Test or Production.
  • 1 year Experience working with Oracle 19c or higher
 
Equipment Requirements:
The candidate will require their own computer and related equipment. The computer's operating system must be a modern version of Windows or MacOS that is compatible with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and related software for remote access. Windows is preferred due to better compatibility. AVD/remote-related software will be installed on the resource's computer.
