Job Summary 

Choleta is hiring a skilled Laboratory Technician to support laboratory activities required to maintain long-term datasets to evaluate the health and productivity of experimental forests within a federal facility.  

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: No  

Job Classification: Permanent; Full-Time 

Duty Station: Otto, North Carolina   

Travel:Up to 10% contingent on business needs  

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Maintains and operates laboratory analytical equipment 

  • Conducts chemical analysis of laboratory samples 

  • Maintains datasets of analytical results including quality assurance  

  • Prepares water, soil, and vegetation for chemical analysis 

  • Performs regular maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment 

  • Maintains adequate stock of samples and consumables and working with the laboratory manager to reorder necessary items 

  • Provides technical guidance to other staff members and volunteers 

  • Follows established quality assurance protocols and safety guidelines 

  • Provides training on equipment as needed 

  • Maintains datasets of analytical results including quality assurance 

  • Assists in making data available to SRS scientists as needed 

  • Preforms chemical analyses of samples using specialized lab equipment, including, but not limited to:  

  • Shimadzu TOC-L/TNM-L analyzer 

  • Thermo Scientific Orion A211 pH analyzer 

  • Astoria 2 Autoanalyzer 

  • Thermo Scientific Flash 1112 elemental analyzer

  • Expertise in Microsoft Excel and Word 

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Skills in 

  • Chemical analysis of water, soil and vegetation samples 

  • Colorimetric methods for liquid chemical analysis 

  • Methods for total nitrogen and carbon analysis 

  • Methods for elemental analysis 

  • Measurement of pH and conductivity 

  • Quality assurance procedures for analysis of environmental samples 

  • Basic laboratory skills 

  • Use of balances 

  • Use of pipettes 

  • Cleaning glassware 

  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures 

  • Ability to follow safety protocols  

 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Associate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Agriculture, or related field 

  • Required: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in related field  

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Agriculture, or related field 

  • Preferred: Previous laboratory experience preferred, particularly in agricultural, biological, or environmental testing 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer 

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
