Role OverviewThe Cytotechnologist will play a pivotal role in the Cytology Laboratory, ensuring the proper handling, preparation, and analysis of specimens while maintaining high-quality standards. The successful candidate will collaborate with medical professionals to provide diagnostic insights and contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and process laboratory specimens, ensuring accurate identification and documentation.
- Conduct initial diagnoses on cytopathology consultations and finalize diagnoses for negative gynecological material.
- Refer abnormal gynecological and non-gynecological specimens to pathologists for final review.
- Utilize laboratory computer systems for data entry, result documentation, and patient information retrieval.
- Monitor and address quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) concerns to improve procedures and customer satisfaction.
- Participate in educational activities related to cytology and maintain professional expertise through continuing education.
- Collaborate with laboratory staff and other medical departments, including radiology, surgery, and oncology, to optimize patient care.
- Maintain accurate records of slides screened and screening hours logged.
- Comply with hospital and departmental policies, including safety, infection control, and accreditation requirements.
- Handle exposure to hazardous materials and maintain operational safety standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support laboratory operations.
Required Qualifications
- ASCP certification in cytotechnology.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
- Strong attention to detail and effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to differentiate colors and tolerate exposure to hazardous materials, including odorous chemicals, carcinogens, and mutagens.
- Proficiency in using computer systems for data entry and information retrieval.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to move continuously around the hospital and between workstations.
- Prolonged standing and occasional lifting or carrying of materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
