The Core Systems Engineer plays a key role in supporting the technology infrastructure of the Credit Union Service Organization (CUSO), with a primary focus on the Corelation Keystone core banking system. This role is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and implementing the hardware and software that power core processing. The Core Systems Engineer ensures system reliability, performance, and recoverability, while serving as a technical liaison to both credit union partners and internal teams.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor, maintain, and optimize the core banking infrastructure, including IBM AIX, Red Hat Linux, DB2 databases, and storage environments.
  • Plan and execute software upgrades, system patching, and performance tuning for the Keystone core system and related components.
  • Collaborate with credit unions and internal departments to support and troubleshoot core system operations, ensuring client satisfaction and smooth service delivery.
  • Implement, test, and refine disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity processes, including regular Core DR testing and validation of recovery procedures.
  • Maintain and monitor system security operations to ensure compliance with policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain system documentation, operating procedures, and technical runbooks to support consistent operations.
  • Analyze and resolve performance or availability issues, escalating when appropriate to vendors or senior leadership.
  • Support scripting and automation initiatives using Python, Java, and Bash to improve operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with IT team members to deliver reliable and secure technology solutions aligned with organizational goals and security standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of server configurations, changes, and operating procedures.
  • Provide after-hours support as part of any on-call rotation. 
  • Keeps stakeholders and management apprised of progress on problems.
  • Clearly document requests and resolutions in resource management system (Help Desk Tickets and project management). 
  • Continues personal development and education to remain informed of current industry development and technologies.

 

Education/Experience:

  • Associate’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in systems engineering or infrastructure support, with a focus on core banking or enterprise systems.
  • Hands-on experience with IBM AIX, Red Hat Linux, DB2, and enterprise storage systems
  • Proven ability to perform software upgrades, patching, and system maintenance in production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Redhat Linux or IBM AIX experience preferred. 
  • Red Hat Certified System Administrator certification.

 

Skills/Qualifications:

Duties are performed primarily in an office setting.  They include, but are not limited to, the ability to operate a computer and other standard office equipment.  In addition, the following skills and qualifications are necessary:

  • Strong knowledge of enterprise server operations
  • Strong knowledge of Linux/UNIX Operating Systems
  • Familiarity with Corelation Keystone or similar core banking platforms
  • Strong knowledge of storage systems (SAN/NAS Management)
  • Knowledge of Python, Java, and Bash scripting languages for automation and system tasks
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and complex environments
  • Ability to explain and discuss complex hardware and software issues in a manner that can be understood by non-technical persons
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
