Director of Safety – Transportation (Brampton or Windsor)

Position Overview

KIT Recruitment is seeking a highly driven and experienced Director of Safety for our transportation client, that has locations across North America.

The Director of Safety is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing all safety policies, programs, and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations within a trucking and transportation environment. This role promotes a proactive safety culture, oversees accident and incident response, ensures regulatory compliance, and partners closely with internal teams to maintain the highest safety standards. The Director of Safety also plays a key role in risk management, data analysis, and continuous improvement of safety operations.

Position Details:

Salary: 100 – 120 K

Location : Brampton

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety policies and procedures aligned with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and state regulations.
  • Ensure policies support operational needs while promoting a strong safety culture.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation, particularly important for self-insured operations.
  • Prepare for and respond to inquiries or inspections from regulatory agencies.
  • Lead investigations of accidents, incidents, and near-misses to identify root causes.
  • Develop corrective action plans to prevent recurrence and ensure lessons learned are communicated and implemented.
  • Develop, deliver, and oversee safety training programs for drivers, employees, and contractors.
  • Ensure ongoing education on regulatory changes, safe driving practices, and company safety standards.
  • Manage the company’s drug and alcohol testing program, ensuring full compliance with federal standards.
  • Conduct regular hazard assessments and implement measures to reduce risk exposure.
  • Track, monitor, and analyze safety data, including violation trends, accident rates, and compliance metrics.
  • Prepare detailed reports for leadership and recommend strategic improvements.
  • Partner with Operations, HR, Maintenance, and other departments to align safety initiatives with business objectives.
  • Communicate with external stakeholders such as customers, insurers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain comprehensive safety-related records, including accident files, training logs, inspection reports, and compliance documentation.
  • Travel frequently within the United States to terminals, work sites, and training locations.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and other transportation safety regulations.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to influence and promote a company-wide safety culture.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience conducting accident investigations and performing root cause analysis.
  • Proficiency in analyzing safety data and creating detailed reports.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle maintenance, inspections, and equipment safety.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively across departments.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • 10 years Experience in Transportation Safety
