Job Summary 

The GIS Instructor delivers high-quality, adult education-centered GIS training. This position is responsible for developing and delivering live virtual and multi-day classroom training, as well as short-form tutorial videos, on geospatial tools and workflows used in water, wastewater, and solid waste utility design and operations. Training sessions will leverage our client’s workflows, datasets, and platforms. 

 

Job Classification: 1099 Independent Subcontractor 

Duty Station:Remote/virtual with potential travel required  

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Assists in development and delivery of live virtual training courses, using platforms such as Zoom, WebEx, or Adobe Connect. 

  • Supports in the design of multi-session trainings focused on client-relevant workflows using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps, and other ESRI tools. 

  • Provides instruction for trainings. 

  • Provides subject matter support for the creation tutorial videos on key GIS tasks in coordination with the IHS GIS Management Team. 

  • Develops and revises training materials, including PowerPoint decks, user guides, handouts, exercises, and pre/post quizzes. 

  • Incorporates adult learning principles, including hands-on exercises, into training formats, with at least 50% of time spent on hands-on exercises. 

  • Participates in curriculum review, feedback cycles, and post-course evaluations. 

  • Drafts training deliverables to meet Section 508 accessibility standards. 

 

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Proficiency in developing both live and asynchronous training materials, including handouts and video content. 

  • Ability to use virtual meeting tools such as Zoom, GoToTraining, or Adobe Connect with integrated phone audio. 

  • Ability to deliver professional, accessible, and technically accurate training content independently or as part of a team. 

  • Ability to tailor training delivery to varying technical skill levels 

  • Strong troubleshooting and user support skills to guide learners through software, data, and configuration challenges during live sessions or follow-up consultations. 

 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Required: Five (5) years of professional experience in GIS topics relevant to federal agencies, such as utility mapping, ArcGIS Pro editing, field data collection, dashboard creation, or geospatial QA/QC. 

  • Required: Five (5) years of professional experience as an instructor or facilitator delivering GIS training, preferably to adult learners in government, Tribal, or utility sectors. 

  • Required: Demonstrated experience with:  

    • ESRI suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, Field Maps, Dashboards, Experience Builder) 

    • AutoCAD and ArcGIS for AutoCAD 

    • Python, Arcade scripting, SQL 

  • Preferred: Experience with water, wastewater, and solid waste infrastructure mapping
