Job Summary 

The Historian conducts research, documentation, and interpretation of historical aspects of our cultural resource projects. The historian guides the identification, evaluation, and protection of significant cultural resources, contributing to the project’s success while ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Duty Station:Oklahoma City, Oklahoma  

Compensation: 

Chloeta reserves the right to offer any candidate above or below the listed compensation amount based on experience or business needs.  

  • $70,000-$90,000 per year  
  • FLSA Exempt 

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Conducts thorough historical research using a variety of sources, including archives, libraries, databases, and fieldwork, to gather information relevant to the project. 
  • Collaborates with archaeologists, anthropologists, and other specialists to interpret historical data and integrate findings into project planning and execution. 
  • Prepares detailed reports and presentations that summarize research findings, historical significance assessments, and recommendations for preservation strategies. 
  • Engages with local communities, indigenous groups, and stakeholders to gather oral histories and other cultural insights, ensuring respectful and inclusive representation of diverse historical narratives.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of cultural resource management plans that balance project development with the preservation of historical sites.
  • Advises project teams on historical considerations, potential impacts on cultural resources, and mitigation measures.
  • Stays informed of current trends, technologies, and best practices in historical research and cultural resource management.

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Ability to conduct thorough and detailed research using various sources, including archives, digital databases, and fieldwork. Historians must be adept at uncovering and compiling historical data that might not be readily accessible. 
  • Capability to analyze historical data critically, identify patterns, and draw accurate conclusions about the past and its relevance to the present and future, especially in relation to the cultural resource being studied. 
  • Understanding and respect for cultural diversity and the significance of cultural heritage sites. This includes knowledge of the practices, traditions, and values of communities associated with cultural resources. 
  • Familiarity with historical databases, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and other digital tools for analyzing and presenting historical data. Comfort with digital humanities methods and tools can be especially beneficial. 
  • Flexibility to adapt to new findings and changing project needs, along with creativity in solving problems related to cultural resource preservation and interpretation. 
  • Understanding of the legal frameworks and ethical considerations surrounding cultural resource management, including compliance with relevant local, state, federal, and international laws, regulations, and guidelines. 
 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Master's degree in history, archaeology, anthropology, or related field in cultural resources  
  • Required:At least five (5) years of working experience in cultural resources 
  • Required: Completion of field school in archaeology or anthropology  
  • Preferred: Certified Professional Historian (CPH) 
  • Preferred: At least two (2) years of cultural resources experience in the Great Plains Regions; Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas 
 

Physical Requirements 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer 
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
