Job Summary 

The Crew Chief oversees fieldwork activities for cultural resource projects. The Crew Chief leads a field crew in conducting archaeological surveys, excavations, and other cultural resource management activities while ensuring the accuracy, efficiency, and safety of field operations.

Duty Station:  Oklahoma City, Oklahoma  

Compensation: 

Chloeta reserves the right to offer any candidate above or below the listed compensation amount based on experience or business needs.  

  • $50,000-$70,000 per year  
  • FLSA Exempt 

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Leads a field crew in conducting archaeological surveys, excavations, and other fieldwork activities in accordance with project objectives, schedules, and protocols. 
  •  Supervises field crew members, including field technicians, volunteers, and subcontractors, providing guidance, training, and direction to ensure the accuracy and quality of fieldwork. 
  • Implements field methodologies and techniques for archaeological survey, shovel testing, excavation, artifact identification, recording, and documentation. 
  • Coordinates with project managers, archaeologists, and other team members to ensure project goals are met and fieldwork is conducted in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Conducts field safety briefings and enforces safety protocols to ensure the well-being of field crew members and compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Monitors field conditions, equipment, and supplies, and communicates any issues or concerns to project leadership to facilitate efficient field operations.
  • Collects and records field data, including site records, field notes, photographs, and GPS coordinates, following established protocols and standards.
  • Assists with artifact processing, analysis, and curation as needed, under the direction of project leadership.
  • Maintains accurate records of fieldwork activities, equipment usage, and project expenses, and assists with project reporting and documentation as required.

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Ability to lead and supervise a field crew effectively, providing clear direction, guidance, and support. 
  • Confidence to make decisions and solve problems independently, while also collaborating with project leadership as needed. 
  • Proficiency in archaeological survey methods, excavation techniques, artifact identification, and documentation protocols. 
  • Familiarity with cultural resource management regulations and compliance requirements, including those outlined in federal, state, and local laws. 
  • Understanding of field safety procedures and protocols to ensure the well-being of crew members and compliance with health and safety regulations. 
  • Experience in conducting archaeological surveys, shovel testing, and excavation units according to established protocols and project requirements. 
  • Ability to assess and interpret field conditions, such as soil types, vegetation cover, and topography, to optimize survey and excavation strategies. 
  • Clear and effective communication skills to convey instructions, observations, and project updates to crew members and project leadership. 
  • Proficiency in written communication for documenting field observations, completing forms, and preparing reports or summaries of fieldwork activities.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage fieldwork logistics, equipment, and supplies efficiently, ensuring that resources are utilized effectively, and project timelines are met.
  • Resilience to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions, and willingness to travel and work on remote project sites for extended periods if required.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry, using software applications for recording field data, and preparing reports or summaries as needed. 

 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field to cultural resources 
  • Required:At least five (5) years of working experience on cultural resource projects 
  • Required: Complete of field school in Archaeology or Anthropology  
  • Preferred: At least two (2) years of cultural resources experience in the Great Plains Regions; Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas  

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer 
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc. 
  • Ability to walk for moderate distances on varying trail terrains and uneven surfaces in all weather conditions. The work is primarily performed in forest and range environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, etc. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include snake or insect bites, stings, falling and rolling materials.  
  • Ability to drive to work sites.
