Job Summary 

The Archaeologist Project Director leads and manages archaeological projects across various sectors. The Archaeologist Project Director plays a critical role in project planning, implementation, and oversight, ensuring the successful completion of projects while maintaining regulatory compliance and client satisfaction.

Duty Station: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma  

Compensation: 

Chloeta reserves the right to offer any candidate above or below the listed compensation amount based on experience or business needs.  

  • $50,000-$75,000 per year 
  • FLSA Exempt 

 

Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Leads and manages archaeological projects from inception to completion, including survey, excavation, monitoring, and mitigation efforts, in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. 
  • Develops project scopes, budgets, and schedules, and oversees project execution to ensure timely completion within budgetary constraints. 
  • Coordinates with clients, regulatory agencies, tribal representatives, landowners, and other stakeholders to establish project objectives, address concerns, and facilitate project approval. 
  • Provides technical guidance and oversight to project teams, including archaeologists, field technicians, and subcontractors, to ensure the accuracy and quality of fieldwork, data collection, and reporting.
  • Conducts fieldwork activities, including pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, excavation, artifact analysis, and site documentation, as needed.
  • Prepares technical reports, archaeological assessments, cultural resource management plans, and other documentation for regulatory review and compliance.
  • Stays current on relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in archaeology, cultural resource management, and historic preservation.

Required Skills/Abilities 

  • Ability to develop comprehensive project plans, including scopes, schedules, budgets, and resource allocation, and effectively execute them to achieve project objectives. 
  • Capacity to implement quality assurance measures and oversee quality control processes to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and reliability of fieldwork, data collection, and reporting. 
  • Proficiency in identifying potential risks and challenges associated with archaeological projects and developing strategies to mitigate them, ensuring project success and regulatory compliance. 
  • Proficiency in all aspects of archaeological fieldwork, including survey techniques, excavation methods, artifact identification, recording, and documentation. 
  • Ability to analyze artifacts and eco facts recovered from archaeological sites, including classification, interpretation, and cataloging. 
  • Experience in preparing detailed site records, field notes, and maps, adhering to professional standards and regulatory requirements. 
  • Understanding of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing cultural resources, such as the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Section 106 compliance, and associated guidelines. 
  • Strong writing skills to prepare clear, concise, and technically accurate reports, assessments, and regulatory documents. 
  • Experience in leading and managing multidisciplinary project teams, providing guidance, direction, and mentorship to team members, and fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment. 
  • Capacity to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently, considering project objectives, regulatory requirements, stakeholder interests, and available resources. 

 

Education and Experience 

  • Required: Master’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field to cultural resources 
  • Required: At least ten (10) years of working experience in cultural resources 
  • Required: Completion of field school in archaeology or anthropology  
  • Preferred: At least two (2) years of cultural resources experience in the Great Plains Regions; Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas 
  • Preferred: Certified Project Director (CPD), Project Management Professional (PMP) 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer 
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
